Who would have imagined that as we follow a schedule of suggestions to get our emergency preparedness supplies in order that the week we should be adding potty supplies.... there would be a nationwide shortage/restriction of toilet paper. I suppose for those that already have an abundance, no worries. For those just starting out. Good luck, do your best, be patient & creative in your efforts. There are many suggestions out there for alternatives to TP but, it is just as difficult to find some of them, let alone consider actually using them. While it may take a little ingenuity and creativity you can still build an emergency hygiene supply kit. Check out our Emergency Sanitation page for more tips and ideas.
Baby steps: Acquire a 5 gallon bucket. Add TP, hand sanitizer, heavy duty garbage bags, twist ties and a shovel.
5k: Purchase or make a bucket toilet kit. Toilet seats are available at most camping stores, or you can fashion a seat from a foam pool noodle for a DIY portable Loo. Include all of the items listed in Baby Steps and don't forget to include something to keep the smell to a minimum such as kitty liter. You may want to create 2 buckets. One for solids and one for liquids. Many people (largely) label them simply PEE and POO (or color coded 💩 💛) for the younger children to differentiate. Those with children, if they have not had experience with using the potty while camping, there may be a learning curve or they may think it a fun new game. Don't forget supplies for the "untrained" baby and any special needs of your family.
Marathon: Consider adding a portable camping toilet and a peri-wash bottle. You may even consider a portable "potty tent" for your "privy". Your kit should include all of the items listed in Baby Steps and 5k.
