Haven't we practiced enough...lately?

We have certainly had some practice in preparedness.  Hopefully, the preparations and new attention to our readiness levels have softened the worry and fear that comes to us all during trying times. Practice Makes Perfect , so they say...  Lets practice for some possible (different) scenarios and become aware of what we need to do, or accumulate for our personal and family needs in order to feel ready with less fear, for a variety of threats to our usual "norm". Following is a suggestion for a fun activity if you have younger family members.  We have had plenty of opportunity and reason to discuss with our households the importance of preparedness, so let's put it to work. Baby Steps:   Do a mock emergency as a family and see how well your Family Emergency Plan works.  This could be as simple as a fire drill including an outside meeting place, or an evacuation to a camp site in the back yard (if applicable). 5k: Take a first aid class as a family.  It is importan

Shelter

Much of the planning and preparation that we need to focus on, or that we have become very aware of lately is that of a food supply that we can "live off of" in the time of need.  We have been counseled by the prophets for years to obtain and store a supply of food and necessities for when needed in times of unemployment or financial crisis, extended inclement weather, earthquake, power outage or as we are currently experiencing, pandemic & quarantine, etc.   During these type of struggles, just having "supplies" on hand is great, however, if an event includes evacuation from our homes, we need to have added another level of preparedness to our supply.  In the case of evacuation and "no place to go", we must consider the possibility of retreating to the hills, or maybe the city will allow use of the local public parks.  We need to be prepared to bring our own equipment, food and shelter. So this week, let's look at some ideas for shelter... outsi

The Great Poopocolypse

Who would have imagined that as we follow a schedule of suggestions to get our emergency preparedness supplies in order that the week we should be adding potty supplies.... there would be a nationwide shortage/restriction of toilet paper.  I suppose for those that already have an abundance, no worries.  For those just starting out.  Good luck, do your best, be patient & creative in your efforts. There are many suggestions out there for alternatives to TP but, it is just as difficult to find some of them, let alone consider actually using them. While it may take a little ingenuity and creativity you can still build an emergency hygiene supply kit. Check out our Emergency Sanitation page for more tips and ideas. Baby steps:   Acquire a 5 gallon bucket.  Add TP, hand sanitizer, heavy duty garbage bags, twist ties and a shovel. 5k:   Purchase or make a bucket toilet kit.  Toilet seats are available at most camping stores , or you can fashion a seat from a foam pool noodle for a DI

Stake Emergency Response Drill

Following is an (abridged) e-mail from Brother Brent Hess, Farmington Utah West Stake Emergency Coordinator.  Followed by an announcement from the Farmington City Emergency Communication representative. Quail Crossing and Parkwood wards, although in Kaysville City limits should participate with this Farmington City Emergency Response exercise as we are grouped as a Stake to participate.
