Haven't we practiced enough...lately?

We have certainly had some practice in preparedness.  Hopefully, the preparations and new attention to our readiness levels have softened the worry and fear that comes to us all during trying times. Practice Makes Perfect , so they say...  Lets practice for some possible (different) scenarios and become aware of what we need to do, or accumulate for our personal and family needs in order to feel ready with less fear, for a variety of threats to our usual "norm". Following is a suggestion for a fun activity if you have younger family members.  We have had plenty of opportunity and reason to discuss with our households the importance of preparedness, so let's put it to work. Baby Steps:   Do a mock emergency as a family and see how well your Family Emergency Plan works.  This could be as simple as a fire drill including an outside meeting place, or an evacuation to a camp site in the back yard (if applicable). 5k: Take a first aid class as a family. ...

Shelter

Much of the planning and preparation that we need to focus on, or that we have become very aware of lately is that of a food supply that we can "live off of" in the time of need.  We have been counseled by the prophets for years to obtain and store a supply of food and necessities for when needed in times of unemployment or financial crisis, extended inclement weather, earthquake, power outage or as we are currently experiencing, pandemic & quarantine, etc.   During these type of struggles, just having "supplies" on hand is great, however, if an event includes evacuation from our homes, we need to have added another level of preparedness to our supply.  In the case of evacuation and "no place to go", we must consider the possibility of retreating to the hills, or maybe the city will allow use of the local public parks.  We need to be prepared to bring our own equipment, food and shelter. So this week, let's look at some ideas for shelter... outsi...

The Great Poopocolypse

Who would have imagined that as we follow a schedule of suggestions to get our emergency preparedness supplies in order that the week we should be adding potty supplies.... there would be a nationwide shortage/restriction of toilet paper.  I suppose for those that already have an abundance, no worries.  For those just starting out.  Good luck, do your best, be patient & creative in your efforts. There are many suggestions out there for alternatives to TP but, it is just as difficult to find some of them, let alone consider actually using them. While it may take a little ingenuity and creativity you can still build an emergency hygiene supply kit. Check out our Emergency Sanitation page for more tips and ideas. Baby steps:   Acquire a 5 gallon bucket.  Add TP, hand sanitizer, heavy duty garbage bags, twist ties and a shovel. 5k:   Purchase or make a bucket toilet kit.  Toilet seats are available at most camping stores , or you can fashion a sea...

Stake Emergency Response Drill

This week we encourage you to learn of and review your neighborhood block plan.  If you don't have a Ward/neighborhood plan, please contact your emergency coordinator or Bishop and encourage them to get a plan in place.   The Stake has a plan that may be viewed here .  Coming up is a drill to practice our communication efforts in the event of an emergency. Following is an (abridged) e-mail from Brother Brent Hess, Farmington Utah West Stake Emergency Coordinator.  Followed by an announcement from the Farmington City Emergency Communication representative. Quail Crossing and Parkwood wards, although in Kaysville City limits should participate with this Farmington City Emergency Response exercise as we are grouped as a Stake to participate. UPDATE:   4-15-18 Brothers and Sisters, We are just about to our April Emergency exercise with the city, this Saturday.  I hope that everyone has been getting the word out to all those in your area to...

Can you hear me now? Communication is Key!

Having an emergency communications plan is an important part of being prepared for short and long-term disasters. The ability to connect with others and report information not only about your own status of safety but about changing situations and new threats is invaluable. If land lines are cut and cell phones are down, how will you transmit the information you need to faraway people? Let’s think about and do something about that. Having communications with members of your neighborhood/ward/stake, your family, and emergency response personnel might just be the factor that makes the difference in receiving help you need or being of help to others. It is of great importance to have a plan in place before a disaster strikes, just like a fire drill, so that you will be able to remain calm and know just what to do, how your radio works, what station you need to be on... even where your extra batteries are. Being prepared means, we plan for the worst possible outcome, not the best ca...

I prepared you so...

"Yesterday's preparation can provide today's calm while also fostering's tomorrow's confidence." I absolutely LOVE this article and the message it sends.  The Lord will never say "I told you so." He and his servants, the prophets and apostles, will only say "I prepared you so..."     Boyd Matheson: As uncertainty increases, search for the affirming voice — ‘I prepared you so’

Sowing the Seeds of Love and Faith

I am so grateful for the opportunity to be living at this time.  While that may seem a strange thing to say right now, I truly believe that through all these trials we are going to see amazing blessings and miracles happen.  Our faith is being tested and we will (hopefully) come out on the other end much stronger as a person and a family with even greater beliefs.     Now that we have all been told that the school closures will last until May 1, I'm sure there are many out there wondering what they are going to do to fill the time.  Well look no further we have been brainstorming to come up with some fun ways to pass the time while safely practicing social distancing.      The first thing that came to mind that will also help your family be a little better prepared and is an invaluable skill to have is GARDENING .  My kids absolutely love to garden.  They love to help get our garden ready to plant and then plant their favori...

Feeling Moved?

With the Covid-19 Pandemic and the Utah earthquake last week, many people are feeling motivated to review, update, increase or even begin gathering some emergency preparedness supplies. Whether a 3 hour kit, 72 hour kit, 2 week storage, 3 month supply, 6 month supply, year or more supply.  Whichever stage you are on or just beginning, we are here to help guide you through your project. We have been working this month on 72 hour kits .  The "grab and go" bag for each family member or at minimum a large bag, suitcase or bin with enough supplies for you and your family to grab in the case of an emergency evacuation in which your home becomes inhabitable or is threatened and you are instructed to leave quickly and get to a safe place.   This week, we want to focus on some miscellaneous items, beyond water, food and clothing. Including adding some spiritual preparedness to your kits too. Even in emergencies we still need to have our spiritual wits about us. As we gather...
